Appleby-in-Westmorland

Appleby-in-Westmorland town center
The attractive and ancient town of Appleby, once the chief town of the ancient county of Westmorland is in the Eden Valley between the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. Its historic gypsy horse fair attracts tens of thousands, both travelling folk and spectators, in June each year. For the rest of the year it is a peaceful centre for visitors to the beautiful areas around the River Eden. Sadly, Appleby Castle is no longer open to visitors. It was once home in the 17th century to the redoubtable Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke, who defied Cromwell to rebuild her northern castles. She is buried in Appleby at the parish church of St. Lawrence.
Here is an Appleby selection from the Around-England blog.
