Appleby in Westmorland

Appleby in Westmorland town center

The attractive and ancient town of Appleby or as it is more correctly known, Appleby in Westmorland, once the chief town of the ancient county of Westmorland is in the Eden Valley between the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. Its historic gypsy horse fair attracts tens of thousands, both travelling folk and spectators, in June each year. For the rest of the year it is a peaceful centre for visitors to the beautiful areas around the River Eden. Sadly, Appleby Castle is no longer open to visitors. It was once home in the 17th century to the redoubtable Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke, who defied Cromwell to rebuild her northern castles. She is buried in Appleby at the parish church of St. Lawrence.

Here is an Appleby selection from the Around-England blog.

Appleby in Westmorland – An April Afternoon

April 22, 2013

After spending Saturday morning listening to lectures on bridges at a Cumbria Industrial History Society conference I suppose it is appropriate to show a photo from Saturday afternoon of the Appleby “New” Bridge over the River Eden – that is, it was new in 1888. The next shot is taken from the bridge looking dowstream. […]

Here is a cold January midday shot of the river, reduced in level from what […]

The River Eden at Appleby This Afternoon

November 17, 2011

The sunshine attracted me away from the keyboard after lunch today. My target, with cameras, was the River Eden at Appleby (or, to give it its full name, Appleby-in-Westmorland). What the warplanes circling and thundering overhead were aiming at, in addition to making white trails in the almost cloudless sky, is anyone’s guess. Ignoring the […]

Appleby Horse Fair – More Photos

June 8, 2011

Today I’m adding a few more of my Appleby Horse Fair photos from last weekend (see horse washing in the River Eden). It was a very successful event this year. Notic above that the young foals are not tied. They simply follow the adults.  Sometimes, though, it looks as though one is asking “Where do […]

Traditional Horse Washing at Appleby Fair

June 7, 2011

In my post earlier today I showed a general view of the River Eden at Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. The past few days have seen the annual gypsy horse fair, with crowds watching the traditional horse washing, racing and other events. Here now are some more detailed photos taken on Friday and Saturday. (Even more Appleby Horse […]

The Around-England Blog Is Back

June 7, 2011

On moving from Nottinghamshire to the Eden Valley in Cumbria back in March we had great difficulty in getting a broadband connection. I’ll not waste time here moaning about the incompetence of internet service suppliers, or the almost unbelievable official neglect of rural areas with regard to digital access, but will now get on with […]
