In September Cumbria welcomes the World Sheepdog Trials to the parkland at Lowther Castle, near Penrith, Cumbria. More than 200 dogs and their handlers from over 20 nations will compete. Many thousands of spectators are expected at this prestigious event and its associated Food & Country Festival. A parade through Penrith is planned for Wednesday, […]

Appleby Horse Fair – More Photos

June 8, 2011

Today I’m adding a few more of my Appleby Horse Fair photos from last weekend (see horse washing in the River Eden). It was a very successful event this year. Notic above that the young foals are not tied. They simply follow the adults.  Sometimes, though, it looks as though one is asking “Where do […]

Traditional Horse Washing at Appleby Fair

June 7, 2011

In my post earlier today I showed a general view of the River Eden at Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. The past few days have seen the annual gypsy horse fair, with crowds watching the traditional horse washing, racing and other events. Here now are some more detailed photos taken on Friday and Saturday. (Even more Appleby Horse […]

The Around-England Blog Is Back

June 7, 2011

On moving from Nottinghamshire to the Eden Valley in Cumbria back in March we had great difficulty in getting a broadband connection. I’ll not waste time here moaning about the incompetence of internet service suppliers, or the almost unbelievable official neglect of rural areas with regard to digital access, but will now get on with […]

Cumberland Show Moves to Carlisle Racecourse

November 20, 2009

I’ve blogged previously (although I see it’s more than a year ago) about the Westmorland County Show but never about the Cumberland Show, the big annual event of the Cumberland Agricultural Society which since 1991 has been held at Rickerby Park. It is good to see the news (in the News & Star and the […]

What’s in the Lake District for Children?

March 12, 2009

“What is there for an eleven year old in the Lake District?” I heard that question a few days ago, and it set me thinking. Firstly, I suppose one has to challenge the idea that there is such a thing as a standard model of eleven year old.  Of course not.  There are girls and […]

The Great North Swim returns to Windermere

March 5, 2009

It was announced a few days ago that The Great North Swim, organised by Nova International, a company founded by Brendan Foster the 1976 Olympic bronze medallist, is to be held again at Windermere in the English Lake District. Last year was its first, and was oversubscribed at 2,500 entries.  This year it will be […]

The Lake District – Stationary Objects and Challenging Speed

February 19, 2009

Two bits of Lake District news in today’s post. As for stationary objects I’m not referring to Janice who refuses to be dragged out of her bed on time in the morning, nor Bill who won’t be budged from the telly on Saturday afternoon.  No, I’m talking about a real statue, one that when it’s […]

Windermere – The Great North Swim

September 1, 2008

In the past I’ve mentioned here a variety of energetic activities in the Lake District – running, walking and cycling.  On September 13th, however, there’s a new one.  It’s the “Great North Swim” – a mile in Windermere.  (No, I won’t call it “Lake” Windermere as in some of its publicity; there’s only one lake […]

A wet week in the southern Lake District

August 5, 2008

My wife and I have just returned from another expedition to the English Lake District, this time to the southern lakes. We camped near the foot of Coniston Water with the intention of building up a better collection of photos of the Crake valley as well of the Coniston and Hawkshead area. Well, things didn’t […]
